Tony Urena
Tony started his martial arts journey at a young age. First introduced to western boxing as a young boy by his father. When he turned 18 he started training in Shukokai (a Shito Ryu derivative). A year later he switched to Tae Kwon Do.
In 1986 Tony found Robert Herten of Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan. After watching one class he immediately fell in love with and dedicated his life to it, obtaining the rank of Nanadan (7th degree black belt). Herten sensei was a mentor, but more importantly a friend who shared his knowledge and love of Okinawan Karate, specifically Chibana-ha Shorin Ryu.
Tony is currently under the auspices of Kikukawa, Masanobu, Judan (10 degree black belt) of the Shorin-Ryu Shinkokai. Obtaining the rank of Hachi-dan (8the degree black belt).
Tony has also trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu obtaining the rank of two stripe blue belt as well as Atienza Kali.
Tony is also a United States Navy Veteran as well as a Veteran Law Enforcement Officer with over 25 years of experience, retiring as a Captain. During his illustrious career he was the training officer for his department and was responsible for their bi-annual qualifications and training for approximately 100 law enforcement officers. Tony also spent 14 years on the SWAT Team, obtaining the rank of Assistant Team Leader and Sniper Team Leader. Tony was also state certified in all aspects of firearms training which included handguns, shotguns, sub-guns, semi and automatic rifles, as well as scoped rifles. In addition, Tony was qualified to testify as a firearms expert, as well as in the “Use of Force”. In addition to being a firearms instructor at the police academy he was also a Defensive Tactics instructor teaching hundreds of new recruits.
Tony brings over 40 years martial experience backed by real world experience. His goal is to share the knowledge and experience he has gleaned over the years.
